Bridget Jones's Diary meets The Nanny Diaries in this UK Best Seller!
"Clever, perceptive and laugh-out-loud funny. A must-read for all sleep-deprived parents!"
- Samantha Tonge, Game of Scones
The only thing Dottie Harris loves more than gin & tonic is her family. Most of the time. From her hapless-but-well-meaning husband to the two energetic bundles of joy that keep her up all night, Dottie certainly has her hands full. And she's tired. So tired.
With quips like "How do sleeping babies know the minute you sit down?" this modern-day diary will have you laughing—when you're not crying with empathy, that is!
Dottie tells it like it is the good, the bad, and the eternal piles of dirty laundry.
Interview with the Author
What was your inspiration to write the Perfect Disaster series?
Mainly my friends and family! I'd bump into people and they'd comment on how my Facebook updates made them smile after a bad day with the kids. One day, while I was working on another book, I needed a bit of light relief and decided that a book in the style of social networking might be a good way of getting to know a character, both for me and people who don't have as much time to read as they'd like. Dottie turned into somebody people wanted to read more of, and the ideas of the predicaments she could get into kept coming thick and fast—especially with my own two monkeys providing material!
It seems these books could fit into several genres. How would you categorize them?
While Dottie is a fictional character, her struggles are real. So I’d say anyone who enjoys parenting humour or chick lit would enjoy these books. Basically, anyone who could use a laugh!
What sets Dottie apart, and how is her story different from other chick lit?
I think, in fact, part of what attracts people to this series is that Dottie's struggles AREN'T different from everyone else's. However, the way she tells them IS different. Perfect Mayhem is comprised entirely of fictional social media updates that are about as honest as you can get. Dottie shares everything, even some of her not-so-fine parenting moments. The other books in the Perfect Disaster series are of a more traditional style but contain Dottie's unique brand of humour.
So this book is part of a series?
Each book can stand alone, but like gin & tonic, they go great together!
Perfect Mayhem (Book 1)
Perfect Mishap (Book 2)
Perfect Christmas (Book 3)
Perfect Mix-Up (Book 4)
If you enjoy fun, light reads with a humourous look at parenting (and drinking gin!), you'll enjoy the Perfect Disaster series. Thanks for reading!

I loved Perfect Mishap, which I read first. Trying to make sense of Perfect Mayhem was difficult. If I want to be involved in social media I'll get on Facebook. I read books to enjoy the story. Way too much trouble to connect the story into a format. Very disappointed that I wasted $2.99 on this book.Product details

Perfect Mayhem Perfect Disaster Book 1 edition by Aimee Horton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
What makes this book so different is that it's made up of social media statuses. You know the kind of thing that we update Facebook with, but way funnier than a lot of stuff that ends up on my timeline! Through her status updates we get to know Dottie, ambitious, and career driven... and pregnant! There are many laugh out loud moments as we follow Dottie while she tries to navigate pregnancy, those early years of parenting and all the changes and challenges that it brings. I found I related to a lot of the scenarios Dottie gets herself into and that made it all the more funny for me.
Survival of the Ginnest is an absolutely hilarious book that can be devoured in one sitting or dipped in and out of, either way it's really enjoyable and as a mum is very relate-able too. So if you're looking for a book that's funny and has an amusing and a little irreverent take on pregnancy and those early years of babies and toddlers then this is for you.
Written entirely in Facebook status updates of Dottie Harris, a vibrant and funny character who takes you on her journey from child-free career girl through her new motherhood, on to the second baby and leaves you as she’s expecting number three.
Dottie is easy to warm to, expressing many of the exasperated feelings and experiences of a parent but delivered with a fab funny twist. Stumbling through motherhood with a ‘helping hand’ from gin, chocolate and a considerable quantity of take away pizza. The importance placed on opening the bar on time made me laugh out loud!
With little statements like “Dottie Harris has chocolate eaters remorse” and “Dottie Harris is really beginning to worry about the spider stalking situation” I almost feel as if Dottie is reading my thoughts! (don’t pretend spider stalking isn’t an issue we all face…)
To sum up. You’ll start the book thinking *I’m not sure I can read a full book written in Facebook status updates* but very quickly you’ll be so into the whole thing that like me you might even absentmindedly press the screen in the expectance you’ll see the comments thread and find out more juicy information… And I defy you to read this book without very much wanting a gin and tonic followed up swiftly by a delivery from Dominos (meat feast for me) and rounded off with a huge bar of chocolate.
Can't wait to read more of her books
This was not what I was expecting. If you like reading Facebook posts then you'll like this story differently set up as such. It is an interesting idea. Some really fun posts Mom can relate too and is fun. I enjoy the author's other book "Perfect Mishaps" better.
‘What an unusual way to write a book’, was my first thought as I started reading it. It took me a few moments to get accustomed to read a book written entirely in the form of social media updates but as I read a few lines I got involved in Dottie’s life and was eager to read further.
Aimee Horton takes us through the life of Dottie Harris, her pregnancy and motherhood. Dottie is like any other modern day woman handling home and work. Life was going on well till she finds herself expecting her first baby. Dottie shares some cute moments as well as chaotic ones. There are moments of exasperation and moments of humor in her status updates.
The struggles of parenting and the tantrums make Dottie resort to a glass of wine or gin. She eagerly waits for her kids’ bedtime so that she can escape to her bar and relax.
Dottie’s social media diary is interesting to read and makes you want to know what happens next. Oh, I loved the Monster and the Chubster and all their antics that made Dottie run up against the wall. Most women would love and relate to Dottie and her life the way I did.
As a debut author, Aimee Horton’s unique style of writing is commendable.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is funny and light-hearted. Survival of the Ginnest is a quick read and a perfect way to relax with a glass of gin.
**I received a free copy (eBook) from LibraryThing for an honest review.
This is kind of a minimalist journal-style novel, written as a series of Facebook statuses "posted" by Dottie over a span of a few years. There were a few funny anecdotes scattered through the book, but as a whole I wasn't too impressed with the format. It *did* achieve the purpose of introducing the reader to some background info on Dottie's life in preparation for the next novels, which are not written in this format. I'll be reading those next and I suspect they'll be better.
I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Aimee Horton is hilarious. She is a woman possessing a comedic gift. No doubt any of her books will leave you chuckling out loud on more than one occasion.
Dottie is lovable, you will be taken with her instantly. If you’re a new mom, a mom from years ago, or are curious about motherhood you will appreciate Dottie and her adventures and misadventures.
In this light read, Dottie’s social updates are both hilarious and touching. Those readers that are mothers will be able to relate to Dottie’s highs, lows as she loving navigates motherhood with full-out enthusiastic gusto.
Sleep deprived, poo riddled diapered invaded, hungry Dottie will keep you smiling and laughing with her entertaining social media updates. Horton creates an imaginative read, wish social media was available on my many late night feedings with my son, don’t know if my update could compare with Dottie’s. Fun, comedic relief sentimental read.
This book is part of a series, however, it is absolutely fine as a stand alone read.
I loved Perfect Mishap, which I read first. Trying to make sense of Perfect Mayhem was difficult. If I want to be involved in social media I'll get on Facebook. I read books to enjoy the story. Way too much trouble to connect the story into a format. Very disappointed that I wasted $2.99 on this book.
